Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I contact you?

Once you reach out — whether by form, phone, or WhatsApp — we'll get back to you to arrange a free 15-minute call. This is a relaxed, no-pressure chat where we hear what you're after and make sure we're the right fit. If you'd like to go further, we'll book an onsite visit ($120) to walk through your home and your existing setup. From there we put together a tailored written proposal with fixed pricing for your approval. No work begins until you're happy with the plan — and if you proceed with the proposal, the $120 is credited to your project.

What is home automation, and how can it benefit me?

Home automation is having a smart, connected home. It lets you control various aspects of your house – lights, temperature, security, entertainment – often remotely from your phone, with voice commands or with scenes that perform actions based on triggers. Benefits include increased convenience (imagine lights turning on automatically as you arrive home), energy savings (by optimizing heating and cooling), enhanced security (with smart doorbells and alarm systems), and greater comfort (perfectly setting the mood with lighting and music).

What kind of devices can be automated in my home?

Pretty much anything that uses electricity! This includes lights, thermostats, door locks, garage doors, security cameras, appliances, entertainment systems, and even garden sprinklers. The possibilities are always expanding! But it’s more than just connecting devices as it can be used to monitor things like your children’s presence, or controlling Wi-Fi schedules, or monitoring the weather and warnings on a tablet or phone. Home Assistant is the heart at the centre of your home, and it can connect to many different services that you already use in your day to day lives.

Do I need to replace all my existing appliances?

No, not at all! We can often integrate your current appliances and systems with smart devices. Sometimes it's as simple as adding a smart plug to a lamp or using a smart thermostat with your existing heating and cooling.

How easy is it to use a home automation system?

We design our systems to be incredibly user-friendly. You'll typically control everything through a simple app on your phone or tablet, or by speaking to a voice assistant like Google Assistant or Alexa. We provide thorough training to ensure you're comfortable managing your smart home.

What if my internet goes out? Will everything stop working?

While some features might rely on an internet connection, we can set up your system to ensure essential functions, like lighting and security, continue to operate even if your internet is temporarily down because Home Assistant is renowned for its local control and privacy.

How much does a home automation system cost?

The cost depends on the size of your home, the complexity of the system, and the specific devices involved. Here's how it works: we start with a free 15-minute call to make sure we're a good fit and hear what you're after. From there, an onsite visit ($120) covers a full review of your existing setup and a detailed discussion of your goals — we'll walk you through what's possible and what it's likely to cost. Work covered in a proposal is agreed upfront at a fixed price. For smaller or ad hoc jobs, our flat rate is $110 per hour plus travel from $20 depending on location.

Is home automation secure?

Security is a top priority. We use industry-standard security protocols and best practices to protect your home automation system from unauthorized access. We'll also educate you on how to maintain good security habits.

What smart home protocols do you utilise?

We use Zigbee primarily due to its affordability, accessibility and compatibility. We can also use Z-Wave if you already use it, Matter-Over-Thread, or even Wi-Fi. Home Assistant supports almost everything, so just ask.

What if I want Home Assistant installed and then do the rest myself?

That’s perfectly fine. Once setup and installed, we can hand over all documentation to you so you can take over. We offer post install support packages to correct any unintended changes and get your system back up and running.

What else are you able to offer?

Being a technology specialist means we can look at and discuss any other technology you have an interest in. Review your TV and sound setup, check what game consoles you have, and ensure everything is working in unison while taking advantage of the features the technology is capable of. We can make recommendations on anything technology related, and if we don’t know the answer, we can research it for you and get back to you. This also includes pre-purchase advice on any technology. If you don’t know what TV to buy, or what phone to get, let us do the research and get back to you so you can be assured you're buying the right thing.
